Tony Daly-Crews

SDI Open Water Instructor, Cave & Technical Diver, Co-Owner

Tony is a U.S. Army Veteran, husband, father, cave diver, and co-owner of Precision Depth Diving. He loves helping students understand scuba by breaking complex ideas into simple, practical steps that make the water feel less intimidating. For Tony, teaching is about sharing the focus, peace, and confidence diving has brought to his life while helping each student feel supported, capable, and welcome.

Scuba training is personal. You are trusting your instructors to guide you into a new environment, help you build real skills, and be there when questions come up after class. That relationship matters to us.

Together, Daniel & Tony built Precision Depth Diving around the idea that divers deserve comprehensive training, growth and joy in the sport, and a personal path that makes the most sense to the student.

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting scuba can feel like a big step, and it is normal to have questions. Here are a few things new and returning divers commonly ask before training with Precision Depth Diving.

No. Open Water Scuba Diver is designed for beginners. You do not need previous scuba experience to start, but you do need basic comfort in the water and a willingness to learn at a steady, responsible pace.

You do not need to be a competitive swimmer, but you do need basic comfort in the water. For Open Water training, students must complete either a 200-meter nonstop swim using any stroke without a mask, snorkel, fins, or other swimming aids, or a 300-meter nonstop swim using mask, snorkel, and fins. Students must also complete a 10-minute survival swim or float.

If you are unsure whether you are ready, let us know before class. We are happy to talk through the requirements and help you understand what to expect.

That is completely normal. Many new divers feel nervous before breathing underwater for the first time. Our approach is patient and step-by-step, with a focus on helping you understand the equipment, practice skills calmly, and build comfort without feeling rushed.

Scuba diving involves real risks, which is why training, preparation, judgment, and equipment understanding matter. Our courses are designed to help students recognize those risks, follow established training standards, and build responsible habits from the beginning.

The timeline depends on the course schedule, your completion of online learning, pool or confined-water sessions, and open-water training dives. SDI lists a suggested 20 training hours for Open Water, but actual scheduling can vary based on class size, student progress, weather, site availability, and logistics. Generally, we will have one weeknight pool night, one weeknight virtual academic session, and two days of open water scuba dives. However, every student progresses at their own pace and may need additional days of training.

For Open Water training, students are required to have their own mask, fins, snorkel, booties, and exposure protection. We recommend at least a 3mm wetsuit with a 5mm vest for Florida spring training, since the water can feel cold even when the weather is warm.

All other required rental gear for the course is included in the course cost. Before class, we will walk you through exactly what you need, what to look for, and what makes sense for your budget and comfort level. Good fit matters, especially with masks, fins, booties, and exposure protection, so we are happy to help you make smart choices before you buy.

Your Open Water course price includes your student kit, SDI eLearning, certification card, and required rental scuba equipment for the course.

Students are responsible for bringing their own mask, fins, snorkel, booties, and exposure protection. Students are also responsible for any gas fills and site entry fees required for training dives.

Before class, we will clearly walk you through what is included, what you need to bring, and any additional costs you should expect so there are no surprises.

Academic sessions will be hosted over Zoom. In-person pool work will be conducted at Cecil Recreational Complex. Locations of open water dives will be determined 3-days prior to class based on site conditions. However, common locations include Rainbow River, Troy Springs, Royal Springs, and Blue Grotto.

Precision Depth Diving offers scuba training through SDI, Scuba Diving International.

Yes. All of our courses are small (<6 students), however, private classes can be scheduled. We believe students learn better when they have room to ask questions, work through skills, and get direct feedback from their instructors and learn from their peers.

A refresher or skills update is usually the best place to start. Even though scuba certifications generally do not expire, skills can get rusty when they are not practiced. A refresher gives you a chance to review core skills, get comfortable with your gear, and ask questions before your next dive.

Yes. That is exactly what we are here for. Tell us about your experience, goals, comfort level, and schedule, and we will help you choose the right next step.

No. Precision Depth Diving trains the public and welcomes students from all backgrounds. As disabled veterans ourselves, we also have a special passion for helping other veterans discover diving as a positive outlet for focus, connection, and personal growth.

Whether you're ready to get certified,  refresh your skills,  or continue on to advanced training,  we are thrilled to help you choose the right next step.
