Night and limited-visibility diving can reveal a completely different side of the underwater world. Familiar sites feel different, marine life changes, and even simple navigation requires more focus when you cannot rely on daylight or long visibility.
The SDI Night & Limited Visibility Diver course introduces the planning, equipment, communication, navigation, and buddy procedures used for diving in reduced-light and lower-visibility conditions. You will learn how to use dive lights effectively, stay oriented, maintain buddy contact, and approach the dive with a more deliberate plan.
This course is not about making darkness feel routine overnight. It is about helping you understand how conditions change the dive and how to respond with better preparation, awareness, and teamwork.

Training With a Buddy?
Night and limited-visibility diving is a great specialty to complete with your regular dive partner. Book together, choose a preferred training timeframe, and we’ll coordinate a small-group session focused on the communication, spacing, navigation, and team habits you will use together on future dives.

No. The prerequisite is Open Water Scuba Diver certification or equivalent. This course is designed for certified divers who want a more structured introduction to diving after dark or in reduced-visibility conditions.
The course includes two instructor-led open water training dives, along with SDI eLearning, planning, briefings, and debriefings.
Training may include true night conditions, limited-visibility conditions, or a combination of both depending on the site, weather, season, and course plan. We will confirm the final plan before your training date.
You will need an appropriate primary dive light and backup light for the course. Contact us before booking if you need help choosing lights that make sense for the type of diving you plan to do.
No. The skills apply to a wide range of diving environments, including Florida springs, lakes, shore dives, ocean dives, dusk dives, darker water, and any situation where visibility is reduced.
The certification shows that you completed training in the conditions covered by the course. You should still stay within your experience level, use appropriate equipment, follow site rules, and plan dives around the conditions you actually expect to encounter.
If you completed the Night / Limited Visibility Adventure Dive during Advanced Adventure, that dive may count as the first dive toward the full specialty. Contact us with your training records and we can confirm what applies.
